Welcome to our class blog! I hope this site will help you give and get ideas for creating your own art projects as well as collaborative projects with other artists (your classmates). Your homework assignments will be posted here and you can post completed assignments in the comments section of that post, if a response is required. Also, please respond to the class question on the top right side of the page for extra credit. Use the links, ideas and other resources on this page to get good ideas or go ahead and share your own! But most important, MAKE ART FUN!

·         Fillet on bottom coil
·         Slip and scored on each coil

Course Information

Welcome to Ceramics! Ceramics I is an introduction into the artistic process of building and creating with clay.  In this class, we will work with 4 main techniques: wheel throwing, slab building, coil building and pinch methods.  I strongly encourage exploration, collaboration and creativity, so get ready to dig in, get dirty and have a great time as you learn and grow artistically!

Course Outcomes: Students will…

-gain knowledge of the basic elements and principles of design and explore how to apply them when creating art using the basic methods and techniques used in clay building processes.

-practice applying concepts to art making, including relating life situations to art and vice-versa.

-learn how to properly critique art and speak about art using the correct vocabulary.

Materials: Students will need to be prepared each day with a pencil, folder and journal, preferably a sketchbook.  There may be times when I invite students to bring items from home to help with their projects or creative processes.

Class Fee: The fee for this class is $20, which should be paid ASAP, as you cannot begin using the materials until you bring the receipt to class (unless other arrangements have been made with me).  If you choose to do any extra projects or a project that is especially large, you may need to purchase the extra clay you will use.

Expectations

Here is what I expect from my students:

-Respect: Students need to have respect for themselves, other students, the teacher and the materials/subject being covered.  Remember the Golden Rule! (Do unto others as you would have others do to you)

-Responsibility: I do not expect perfection, but I do expect each student to take responsibility for their actions and do their best every day.  Being responsible means staying ahead of the game and making the most of your time in this class as well as following all of the safety rules.

-Participation/preparation: Students will come to class prepared with necessary assignments and materials.  They will participate in class discussions, group work and all classroom procedures.

Here is what you can expect from me:

-Respect: I have respect for the students I am working with and treat them with dignity and kindness.

-Responsibility: I will keep all grades and assignments up to date.  I, too, am not perfect and I will also take responsibility for my actions and will do my best every day.

-Participation/preparation: I will come to each class prepared to teach and learn with my students.  I will make time to help students when they need it so everyone can reach their goals.

Grading Procedures

Grades will be based on the percentage of points earned.  Points are awarded for attendance, participation, assignments, projects, journals, quizzes and tests.  I firmly believe that every student can get an A in this class and I will do everything I can to help everyone reach that goal.  However, this requires that students approach me IN A TIMELY MANNER if they are having a problem or if their grade is dropping.  Students can help me help them if they will do this along with keeping track of the assignment dates, checking their grades often, informing the teacher quickly if a mistake has been made and saving all of their work until the final grades have been given.

Grade Scale:

Assignments

Sketchbook/daily warm-up--20% of grade—There will be a warm-up assignment in the first 5 minutes of every class to help students get into a creative mood and thinking about art.  These will be kept in your sketchbook and cannot be made up (so be on time).  Your sketchbook will also be used to brainstorm ideas and make sketches of your projects.  You will need to have an entry for each assignment.  Sketchbooks can remain in class or you can take them home, as long as they are turned in every other week to pass off the required entries. I will drop 2 entries at the end of each term.

Projects and assignments--45% of grade--There will be approximately 5 major projects and a number of small assignments (subject to change with prior notification).  I expect you to do your best work. Time out of class will often be needed to make the project “A” worthy.  You might not love every assignment so once a term you can propose an alternate project that I MUST APPROVE that can take the place of an assignment/project.

Attendance/participation--20% of grade--If you are late for class and miss the warm-up or quiz, it cannot be made up (remember I will drop 2).  Also, you will need to sign in if you are late or it will be counted as an absence.  Students who miss class, even for school-excused absences, are responsible for finding out what they missed and making up any missed assignments.  Be sure to check the class website.

Quizzes and Tests--15% of grade--I don’t do “pop” quizzes, so you will have time to prepare.  And there will be 2 small tests throughout the semester.

Extra Credit--up to 5% of grade--There will be opportunities available to every student to get extra credit up, which can really bump up your grade in the end.

Late Work: Students can turn in assignments late up to one week after it’s due with only a 2% drop in their grade.  After one week, you lose a full letter grade per day, so turn in your assignments on time!!

2nd Chances: This is art.  When is it ever perfect the first time??  If you are not satisfied with your grade or with how your project turned out, you can redo any assignment and turn it in 2 weeks before the end of term to have it re-graded.  I fully encourage students to take advantage of this opportunity!

Honesty: I expect full honesty from my students.  If any student is caught cheating, lying or not being entirely honest, they will get a ZERO on that assignment and will not be able to make it up.  They may also lose some participation points.  Dishonesty will get you NOWHERE in life, so please be honest.

Taking Risks: I hope to cultivate an environment where you are comfortable trying new things and exploring art through experimentation and possible failure.  I will be there to help you, but understand that not everything you try will work.  The point is to learn from your mistakes so you can make it better the next time.

Other Classroom Policies

Leaving Class: If you need to leave class, you MUST take a hall pass and sign out. If you leave without permission, you will automatically lose half of your participation points for the day.  If you are gone for over half of the class time, you will lose all of your participation points for the day and it will be counted as an unexcused absence.  You can use the hall pass WITH MY PERMISSION whenever it is needed (unless it is being abused).

Class Website: Our class website is ourartstories.blogspot.com. I will try to keep it up to date with all of the assignments and demos if you need them.

Email: My email is holli.allred@nebo.edu if you need to contact me.  Though I try, I cannot promise to check my email on the weekends.

Cell Phone Use: The school policy is NO CELL PHONES.  There will be times when you may use your phones, but I will let you know.  If you use your phone without permission, it may be taken away.

Clean Up: Cleanliness is VERY IMPORTANT in an art classroom.  If you do not leave your work area neat and tidy or if your mess continues into the hallway, you will lose your participation points for the day and may be given extra chores around the classroom.
